GLASGOW DIARY
Gorbals memories

THE Scottish Jewish Archives Centre is holding a special event on the Jewish Gorbals on April 29 (7.30pm).

The event, an illustrated presentation on 'Memories of the Jewish Gorbals' by Harvey Kaplan, takes place at Giffnock Synagogue. Also being shown, is a short documentary, Glasgow Jewish Community Week, 1994, which forms part of the Archives' collection.

Coming up soon, is the highly popular Glasgow Jewish Journey bus tour on Sunday, June 10.

The events form part of the SJAC 25th anniversary celebrations and appeal.

The SJAC is looking for a photograph of the Tudor Ballroom/Cinema which once stood in Fenwick Road, Giffnock. It was used for overflow services of Giffnock Synagogue. As a cinema, it was owned by the Frutin family.

In the 1960s, it was bought by the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust and later sold to raise funds for the purchase of The Glen, on whose grounds Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue was later built.
