VOLCANO FLIGHTS CHAOS
No idea when they’ll be home

CREDIT-CONTROLLER Simon Nadler went to the Gambia, west Africa, to visit his grandma on April 10.

Travelling with his wife Rebecca, the couple had only planned to stay a week. But they are still stranded, uncertain of when they will be able to fly home.

Simon, 25, of Radcliffe, said: “When the volcano first started erupting we didn’t really foresee the problems that it was going to cause.

“We travelled on a package holiday and since the flight delays we have been upgraded to full board and have had our room paid for.”

He added: “We are lucky that we have been able to stay in our hotel because other tour operators are moving all their guests to one hotel — so that it is easier to communicate with them.”

And although the pair are concerned about missing work, they are also worried about running out of essential medication.

Simon explained: “We have to take malaria tablets while we are here and when we get back.

“But because we are still here we are taking the ones we should have been saving until we are back home.

“The problem is we don’t know how many tablets we will need as we don’t know how long we will be stranded for.”

The couple said that the atmosphere in the hotel was becoming tense as guests became increasingly frustrated at the situation.

“People are running out of money and others are being told they have to leave at extremely short notice,” said Simon.

“This morning, guests who were due to leave before us were given just 90 minutes to get ready to go to the airport – some people were still asleep and others were still at the pharmacy buying extra emergency medication, unaware they would be going home.”

When the Jewish Telegraph spoke to Simon yesterday he had been told that there were no flights for him and Rebecca, despite scheduled flights taking off as normal.

He said: “We’ll have to sit and wait, but it might be days before we go anywhere. To make matters worse, people who are scheduled to fly out tomorrow will do so as normal while we can’t go anywhere.”
